Chapter the 2nd
You couldn’t imagine my delight and horror when I spotted that woman again! There she was strolling through the town, seemingly unaware of the loud, hard taps of her heels. Her eyes only ever drifted here and there, but usually composed and controlled. I had been preparing myself exactly for this moment. Now is the time, I braced myself. I walked right up to her, and the closer I got to her the more my confidence and excitement rose. Yet, I couldn’t begin to describe the terror I felt in my legs, or the screams of my heart alarming me of what’s to come.
With conviction I spoke, “Hello miss, I do love your heels—where did you get them?” I think I missed some words such as “do love” and all the words after where—but thank goodness she smiled at me! I could feel my lips quivering, but the moment was lulled by her warm smile. I caught a slight excitement in her eyes—even amusement, If I think back on it.
“Oh this! It’s all leather. A man was coming through town with all sorts of items and this one caught my eye,” with the point of her right heel she gently tapped the ground, showing it off to me. “It’s the strongest heeled shoe I got and was well worth the price."
Well. After that I didn’t really have much to say. I kept racking my brain for something worthwhile to say as I looked around at the produce. Fool! Speak! Say something! My mind started spiraling, my heart throbbing, and my limbs—well—they were in no better condition.
Once I could get myself under control I turned back only to find the woman gone. I thought of following her but then thought better of it. Alas, our little interaction was over. Nevertheless, in those brief moments we talked and she smiled at me. I was content and finished my itinerary for the market, humming happily along the way.
I walked exhaustedly, more than I needed to. I had foolishly hoped I would naturally bump into her again. Oh, well! I put down the bags of food on the floor and went to wash my hands and feet. I changed my clothes as I didn't like the feel of outside air on them. It made me feel better to be in clothes that hadn't been worn outside or else I'd feel mighty uncomfortable sitting or laying down.
I sat down on a chair in the dining room and started to rub my soles of my feet. Strange thoughts occured to me as I mindlessly rubbed my foot. I thought back to that moment in the market. Then, I remembered her voice and her smile. I smiled to myself, pressed my lips together, and closed my eyes—basking in the moment.
